Job Description:
Actors entertain and communicate with people through enacting a character in a story. Their job is perhaps the most seen and appreciated in a film, play, television serial or an advertisement. However, only a few actors attain stardom and the rest are cast in supporting roles. Acting is a ruthlessly competitive profession and only those with talent and mettle, and perhaps a bit of luck are able to make it to the top or manage to create a niche for themselves. The rest struggle for a toehold in the profession and pick up roles wherever they can.
Educational Qualification:
Actors need natural talent and creative ability that will enable them to portray different characters. Physical appearance and screen/stage presence is also equally important and may often be a deciding factor in being selected for particular role. Nevertheless formal training in acting, singing and dancing is useful in honing natural talent and sharpening skills.
There are a number of institutions in India, which offer courses in various aspects of filmmaking. Notable among them is the Film and Television Institute of India situated at Pune. Selection for these courses is through an aptitude test. Other noteworthy institutes offering courses in acting and theatre are National School of Drama at New Delhi and Bharatiya Natya Academy, Lucknow. There are also many well-known institutes offering professional courses in dancing and music like Bharatiya Kala Kendra and Kathak Kendra in Delhi and Kalashetra in Chennai. Few of the ex-film stars and people related with the industry have also opened schools offering courses in acting.
Opening:
Actors with standing and experience are always in great demand in which ever filed they are viz. motion pictures, theatre or television serials and advertising. Some may also take up direction and teaching after a career in acting.
