Job Description:
An editor or the editor-in-chief requires possessing innate quality of journalistic vision, quality of leadership, high professional stature and reputation within and without office. The Editor is responsible to evolve the policies, maintain liaison with leaders in politics, industry, society etc. Moreover, he should be able to judge the various aspects of the public mood and preferences. The quality of leadership requires that he can convert his team of reporters into cohesive and motivated group of committed journalist with clear communication with them. Major newspapers and newsmagazines usually employ several types of editors like an executive editor or a managing editor.

Then there are New/Features Editor who control the reporting staff coordinates assignments and ensure that the deadlines are met. Assistant Editors are responsible for page layouts and plan the prioritisation of stories. Sub-editor give final shape to the story submitted by a reporter and may even have to completely re-write stories to fit the space assigned. They also write headlines and sometimes help assistant editors in composing page layouts.

Educational Qualification:
Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communications. Also refer to ‘introduction’ to journalism.

Opening:
Career opportunities for journalism are open in newspapers, magazines and periodicals, news agencies and bureau, television and radio, Internet, international newspapers and magazines. Employment avenues are also available in the Indian Information Service of the Government, Directorates of Publicity, Advertising and Visual Communication agencies etc. In addition the option of free launching always exists for a journalist. However job of an editor, other than the basic qualifications, would also require sufficient experience in journalism.
