Lawyers

Job Description:
Lawyers represent one of the parties i.e. either the appellant or the accused in a court by presenting evidence and arguing in support of the client. They also act as advisors and counsel their clients on their legal rights and obligations in business as well personal matters and suggest course of action. The more detailed aspects of a lawyer’s job depend upon his or her field of specialization and position.

Educational Qualification:
Graduate (LLB) or Post Graduate (LLM) degree in Law.

Opening:
Other than going for a private practice or joining a firm as a solicitor or a consultant, a qualified lawyer can also join government service. A candidate can qualify the exam conducted by UPSC or State Service Commission and join the Indian Law Service or the State Legal Service and become eligible for appointment as Munsif. Further promotions lead up to the post of Sub-Judge and a District and Sessions Court Judge who represent the highest judicial authority for the district. On the basis of seniority and availability of posts, these judges can then be appointed to the High Court and beyond to the Supreme Court.

Law graduates can also apply for the legal branch in the defence forces. Those who qualify in the services selection board interview, group testing and psychological testing, are absorbed in the Judge Advocate Generals’ department in the defence services. State and Central Government undertakings and public sector corporations also employ lawyers in their legal departments.
