Job Description:
The work of a Mathematician falls in two broad categories- namely theoretical or pure mathematics and applied mathematics. Theoretical mathematicians develop new principles and try to work out previously unknown relationships with the existing principles of mathematics.

Applied Mathematicians use theories and techniques such as mathematical modelling and computational methods to formulate and solve practical problems in various field such as engineering, business, and social sciences.

Educational Qualification:
Post Graduate or Research Degree in Mathematics. BITS, Pilani and the IITs also offer five year integrated courses after 10+2 as well as graduate courses in pure/applied mathematics and statistics.

Opening:
Mathematicians have the options in the fields of operations research, numerical analysis, software programming, information and data processing, robotics, industrial research and development. They also have scope as teachers. A combined degree in mathematics and computer science would broaden the prospects even more.
