Job Description:
Statisticians interpret information and data, which is critical for developments in all fields. Theoretical statisticians develop statistical methods and tools as well as their application. Applied statisticians use these tools and methods to interpret data and make predictions. They play an important role where trends have to be studied to take a policy decisions and formulate future programs. One useful technique often used by the Statisticians is ‘sampling’. In this information about a group of things or about a population of a particular area is obtained by surveying a small portion of the total.
Educational Qualification:
Graduate/ Postgraduate Degree in Mathematics with specialization in statistics. BITS, Pilani and the IITs also offer five year integrated courses after 10+2 as well as graduate courses in pure/applied mathematics and statistics.
Opening:
Options for Statisticians exist with government departments, public and private enterprises, research institutions and establishments of higher education. Indian Statistical Service is a very attractive option. Those with a background in computer science or specialized knowledge of the field they wish to work would have better career options.
