Archaeologists delve into the past and interpret earlier civilizations. They also devise means of preserving and maintaining existing monuments and other objects of historical importance.
Archaeology is a multidisciplinary science, which requires knowledge in other fields, like geology, anthropology, botany, chemistry and art as well. Archaeologists also require being aware of the social and cultural influences, art and architecture of regions, and the geol - physical conditions in order to conduct archaeological research.
Archeologists study architectural relics, old monuments, and inscriptions and undertake excavations to identify the period to which they belong. They work to establish the relevance of such evidence in various stages of development of civilization. It offers a specialization in Numismatics and Epigraphy.
Numismatics is study of old coins, tokens, paper money and other related objects such as medals etc. Study of these objects provides important insights into the past and assists in restructuring it. Epigraphy is the study of inscriptions on ancient monuments, rocks, temples, copper, plates, seals etc. Epigraphists’ takes ink impression of inscriptions and then decode them. The information so deciphered can be used for restructuring of the past. Other than these areas of specialization, an Archeologist can also take up the task of preservation and maintenance of ancient monuments and artifacts.
An increased awareness of the cultural heritage of India has given greater prominence to activities such as preservation, restoration and excavation of ancient monuments and artifacts and therefore specialists in this field are in great demand. The Archeological Survey of India employs a large number of people. Employment opportunities are also provided by museums and educational and research institutions. Educational Qualification:
There are a number of institutions, which offer courses in Archeology. However those with a background of ancient history and culture can also enter this field. The Institute of Archeology, which is under the auspices of the Archeological Survey of India in Delhi, is one of the few institutes, which offers a specialized course in Archeology. Postgraduate diploma offered by the institute is open for candidates with a Masters Degree in Indian History (ancient or medieval) or Archeology or Anthropology. The diploma is of 2-year duration.
